NORTH POLAR EXPEDITION of airship ITALIA 1928 under captain Umberto Nobile, new attempt by this celebrated Italian aeronaut to reach the North Pole, unique and authenic documents including three original telegrams sent from the airship, one posted at the German airship port of Seddin close to Stolp containing an account of predeparture preparations for the northwards journey, the next still upbeat message from the passage Stockholm - Finland with " distante circa 60 Km da Stoccolma, ha sorvolato la citta, Helsingfors, vari aviatorii finlandesi incontro al dirigibile Italia", eventually from North Sweden the message " tutto procede benissimo, siamo vicini ad Hasparanda." In the further course of the journey the airship landed at the outpost on Svalbard already known from the 1926 expedition. From there it headed for the archipelago of Sewernaja Semlja and on the last leg of the journey reached the North Pole but was unable to alight due to strong winds. The airship crashed on its return flight to Svalbard and its salvaging cost the lives of several crew members including Roald Amundsen
